Innovations in Commercial Door Technology

By Blog Master on 29 Mar 2015 In

Commercial door technology marches on. New solutions and better systems provide innovative ways for companies and other institutions to enhance the convenience, performance and safety of their commercial door investments. In this article, we'll explore some of the newer features available on modern commercial doors and accessories.

Security Grilles

Security grilles protect a variety of applications, including commercial, industrial and tenant locations such as public garages, receiving docks and manufacturing facilities. Overhead Door offers several types of products.

The RapidGrille Advanced Performance Model 676 allows unobstructed light and airflow. The door has springless, direct-drive design, photoelectric eyes, automatic stop lock brake and a self-monitoring sensing edge.

For interior applications such as mall storefronts where a standard security grille might allow pilferage by passing products through the open spaces, we offer a new product with perforated aluminum panels.  Overhead Door's new Model 674 can be powder coated and equipped with an electrical operator.

Control Panels

The electronics controlling commercial door operation continues to evolve. For example, the Model 676 Security Grille is mated to a NEMA 4X control panel equipped with a timer, counter and advanced diagnostics. This controller is rated for harsh environments. For advanced fire protection, the Overhead Door Fire Sentinel is a time-delay door release device that can shut a fire door during an emergency.

Commercial Door Operators

Overhead Door is the only manufacturer of a full line of integrated commercial/industrial doors and operators. All of these operators are UL 323 2010 compliant, and include the following models:

  • RHX -- a heavy duty commercial operator for demanding applications
  • RSX -- advanced performance features in a standard-duty rolling door operator
  • RMX -- a belt-drive medium duty operator that is dependable and easy to install
  • CDX -- a line of highly reliable counter door commercial operators

Because Overhead Door Corporation build both the door AND the door operator, they can offer a standard and extended warranty.

Digital Wireless Keypads

An attractive alternative to remote controllers or keys, digital wireless keypads can handle multiple doors. The Overhead Door Model OKP-BX Wireless Keypad has an all-weather plastic flip-up cover that resists UV damage. The new pad has been enlarged and features highly visible lighted buttons, with a separately located program button. It also features a low-battery indicator, a Triple-Lock battery compartment and program memory that needs no reprogramming when changing batteries.

Remote Controller Security

Commercial applications must protect against code thieves who steal radio signals to access protected facilities. Overhead Door defeats code thieves with its CodeDodger Access Security System that digitally alters an opener's access code each time the controller is activated. The CodeDodger chooses a new code from 4.3 billion possibilities. The same code will not open the door more than one time, and the standard Commercial/Industrial system can handle up to 250 remote controllers, each capable of working as a three-button control, Open-Close-Stop!. The commercial version of CodeDodger transmitters cycle between two different frequencies, 315 and 390 MHz to further enhance security.

Extensibility

An auxiliary output module for a commercial door operator can integrate supplementary functions, such as horns, lights and monitoring systems. These modules help bring a commercial door into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act by supporting external flashing lights and horns. These output modules work with the Overhead Door X-Series of commercial operators by providing lamp output contacts and multiple relay contact points at travel limits.

Other Accessories

A variety of other accessories increases the functionality of doors and operators, including:

  • Time to Close Module: provides inputs for control, safety, timer hold and timer close functions. The on-board keypad can enable or disable safety inputs.
  • Bottom Sensing Edge: causes a door to stop and reverse upon encountering an obstruction.

Special Controls and safety devices, Keypads, Card Readers, Remotes, Phone access, Light Curtains, etc. can build on to multiple safety systems especially at EMS facilities.

Look for continued evolution of garage door technology, as consumers demand more features, lower prices and reduced maintenance costs.
