Garage Door Paint Coat Options

Always look for a high-quality polyester paint or powder-coat finish for aluminum and steel doors. Powder coating can protect metal hardware, tracks and slats. Even if you purchase a premium wood door, powder coating the metal parts will provide years of protection and beauty.

What Is Powder Coating?

Unlike liquid paints, powder coatings are dry when applied, so no solvent is required. The powder is electrostatically applied and then exposed to high temperatures, which causes it to form a durable, hard skin. Powder coating is an ideal way to protect metal parts from corrosion, especially when the environmental conditions are harsh. Powder coating is not used on plastics, wood or foam. The traditional method of application has been hot galvanizing. However, Overhead Door Corporation has adopted several new coating techniques that provide superior protection and extended lifetimes, and these are available on many products.

Consumer-Friendly Choices

The standard quality dual-coat finish used on coiling door slats is a polyester paint in gray, tan, white or brown. Consumers can select among three powder-coating options from Overhead Door Corporation’s. The company has invested in a state-of-the-art powder coating system it calls PowderGuard that optimizes the two-coat application and curing process. Special optional finish selections can be used to protect against UV radiation, high salt conditions, exposure to chemicals and other environmental conditions.

The three PowderGuard finishes offered by Overhead Door are:

  1. PowderGuard Premium Powder Coat: a thermosetting polyester powder coat that provides superior weather resistance. It is available in almost 200 different colors, plus custom color matching and a special EZ Clean finish.
  2. PowderGuard Zinc Finish: This powder is enriched with zinc to provide excellent protection against corrosion. PowderGuard Zinc Finish powder coating outperforms both cold-galvanized and hot-dipped steel in resisting rust.
  3. PowderGuard Weathered Finish: The ultimate in scratch resistance, this is a thick industrial textured powder coat for superlative product protection. The Weathered Finish is available in 10 rich colors: iron, platinum, rust, dark roast, brown, earth, terra cotta, bronze, copper, olde copper and stucco.

Consumers can mix and match powder coatings for door slats and guides to reach the optimum blend of economy and protection. If you choose PowderGuard Weathered Finish for all door parts, Overhead Door will provide a five-year warranty against flaking, peeling, blistering, cracking and fading. The door parts included in full-door system protection are the guides, head plates, bottom bars, hood and slats. Doors up to 46 feet in width can receive PowderGuard protection.

Non-Metal Doors

For those who prefer the natural beauty of wood doors, you can choose from a variety of stains to bring out the characteristics of the particular species of wood used to construct the door. Wood doors can also be purchased with painted surfaces to match specific design requirements. Two-toned painted trim boards are available with several Overhead Door collections. Durability and beauty can also be achieved with fiberglass doors in which the color is intrinsically incorporated into the material. By using an oak grain pattern and natural stain colors, you can mimic the look of wood at a cost savings and enjoy the durability of a steel construction in the interior.

Whatever your preferences, Overhead Doors are available in the desired material, design, color, texture and finish to fit into any architectural scheme.
